Are BRDF measurements the work of art?
Experience has shown that the measurements of light scattering by surfaces, described by the bidirectional reflectance-distribution function (BRDF) is an art in itself. I will demonstrate this with measurements obtained by Cloud Absorption Radiometer (CAR) during numerous field campaigns around the world. Importantly, these measurements reveal that the use of aircraft-based sunphotometer measurements to validate satellite retrievals of the above cloud aerosol optical depth may be problematic.
