Code 613.2 Branch Seminar Series: Mike Iacono

Accurate treatment of radiative transfer is essential for dynamical models to simulate weather and climate effectively. This seminar will discuss the AER radiation models with an emphasis on the development and validation of RRTMG, the broadband longwave and shortwave model for use in general circulation models that is being tested in GEOS-5. Recent applications of RRTMG and its impact on weather and climate models that are maintained at ECMWF, NCEP and NCAR will be described. In the context of accurate radiative transfer, the direct comparison of modeled and observed satellite radiance provides an effective, alternate method of evaluating the simulation of temperature and water vapor in GCMs, and this will be illustrated with the NCAR climate model.
