Global, satellite-based data sets spanning the last 30 years are used to study climatologies, inter-annual and inter decadal variations and trends in precipitation, along with surface temperature and water vapor, on both global and regional scales. These data sets, as well as techniques to use satellite precipitation information to investigate the global distribution of floods, both in real-time and for retrospective analysis of extremes, will be discussed.
