Following the CTP-HIlow framework, local land-atmosphere feedbacks are diagnosed for India. Based on sounding measurements of the lower 300 hPa of the atmosphere, it is determined whether the land surface (wetness) state has an influence on the occurrence of convective precipitation.
The validity of the framework, that was developed for the US, is first tested for India. This is done by forcing a single column model with soundings from India.
Secondly, it is determined how often atmospheric conditions occur during which the land surface has an influence on convective precipitation. For this, 30 years of radio soundings are diagnosed, using the adapted framework for India.
Lastly, it will be tested whether a wet soil actually increases precipitation during the periods in which this is expected by the framework. In order to do this, a precipitation dataset and satellite data (specific humidity, cloud cover, cloud top temperature; all from the AIRS satellite) are compared for irrigated and non-irrigated areas.
