Bonanza Creek Research Forest, Alaska

This project, funded under NASA’s Interdisciplinary Science (IDS) Program, was to measure column CH4 and CO2 over thawing permafrost at the Bonanza Creek Research Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska. After our first trip to the site in 2015, the difficult terrain and conditions motivated us to completely redesign our instrument into a portable, solar-powered unit that could be brought into a site on a military backpack harness. Our 2016 trip extended observations into thermokarst bog, fen, and black spruce sites.  Sample data from the black spruce site is from Wilson et al., 2019. More about the Bonanza Creek site can be found at: https://www.lter.uaf.edu/
